Volunteer Pilots Needed

Use your general aviation skills to help people in need. Angel Flight West arranges transportation for medical care, special needs camps, and other essential services. Many people cannot reach needed care because of the cost, or they are too ill to fly commercially or drive long distances. Join our special volunteers in this unique community service.

There are Hundreds of Passengers Who Need Your Help

Some available flights in your area. Full list
We fly 10 missions every day of the year. This map shows some of our missions that you could fly. Each of these flights represents a chance for someone to get the medical care they need. Each flight is a chance for hope that you can help them achieve.

What is expected of you

We are grateful for your participation at whatever level works best for you. When you fly, how often you fly and whom you fly are all up to you. We don’t expect a certain number of flights. Our passengers understand that we don’t guarantee service. Cancelling for any reason is always your choice.

Who can join

We welcome anyone who wants to be a part of Angel Flight West. To fly missions, you’ll need to meet some minimum requirements, and complete a short ground orientation. Many of our pilots rent aircraft. It doesn’t matter where you live, but our flights are in the western US, including Alaska and Hawaii. If you’re not ready to become an AFW Command Pilot, you can volunteer as a mission assistant or provide ground transportation.

Benefits of Becoming and Angel Flight West Pilot

In addition to the rewards of service, Angel Flight West hosts social events and a speaker series on aviation related topics where you can meet fellow pilots. For pilots flying Angel Flight West missions, many FBOs offer fuel discounts and waive customary fees.

What our passengers say

“We could not have made it these past two years without you all. Any time you need a testimonial, hands-down, you have it from us. Regards, the Williams Family in Durango.” — Joe, Jen, Pike and Mackenzie

“Thanks you so much for flying me from Arcata to Oakland. I think that flight was the first one I really relaxed on and enjoyed. The difference between 6 hours each way in the car makes all the difference to my body. You are great to give your time and plane so I can get my chemotherapy. Thanks for all you do.” — Linda Hirsch

What our pilots say

“Flying for Angel Flight West has not been just something that I do, it's become part of who I am. You folks run a remarkable organization and it has been very enjoyable and very meaningful for me to serve it!”— Kevin Moore

“Like many pilots who have worked hard to earn their certificates I’ve found after a while it becomes clear that flying for training, the occasional pleasure trip with the family or just the proverbial $100 hamburger just does not provide a sense of satisfaction they once did. Angel Flight affords an opportunity to upgrade my passion for flying to compassion for others. I can use my skills and equipment to assist others whom might not be able to help themselves. The sense of accomplishment after each mission is what keeps me coming back.”— Rayvon Williams

“Flying Angel Flight missions allows me to help people in their time of need, while allowing me the pleasure of flying across this great country.”— Derrick Teal – Oregon Wing

“I joined Angel Flight West in July of 2005. I thought it would be a great way to combine my passion of flying with the joy of helping others. The last 6 years of flying for AFW has wildly surpassed my expectations. I have flown 28 flights as an Angel Flight West Command pilot. Every flight has been different and memorable from flying Santa Flights filled with toys to deliver to Native American tribes to flying kids with cancer. I can’t wait for my next flight.”— Dwight Baldwin
